Main interests
- Days 1–4
Beijing
Use the imperial central axis, hutong neighborhoods and public parks to compare historic and present-day Beijing.
Continue to: Xi'an · High-speed rail
- Days 5–7
Xi'an
Give the Terracotta Army its own day and keep the city wall, mosque, food streets and museum appointments in logical clusters.
Continue to: Chengdu · High-speed rail
- Days 8–11
Chengdu
Plan pandas early, then connect teahouses, markets, Sichuan food and neighborhood streets at a slower pace.
Continue to: Guilin · Flight or high-speed rail
- Days 12–14
Guilin
Use Guilin as the river-city gateway, with karst viewpoints and a measured transition toward Yangshuo.
Continue to: Shanghai · Flight
- Days 15–18
Shanghai
Compare the Bund and old city with lilong lanes, neighborhood food and the contemporary riverfront.
Continue to: Hangzhou · High-speed rail
- Days 19–21
Hangzhou
Separate West Lake walking from a tea-village or temple day so weather and seasonal light can guide the order.
Arrival and departure
Use Beijing as the entry point and Hangzhou or Shanghai as the exit. Rail handles Beijing-Xi'an-Chengdu, flights save time on the southwest legs, and the final Hangzhou stop connects easily back to Shanghai if required.
Why this route works
No city is reduced to a one-night stop. The route alternates history-heavy sections with slower food, nature and neighborhood days, using flights only where they save meaningful time.
