From Xining and Qinghai Lake, the route descends into the Hexi Corridor at Zhangye and ends with four measured days around Dunhuang's caves and desert.

Reserve changing light for the Danxia landform and keep city or temple visits separate from the long landscape day.

Dunhuang
Separate Mogao Cave reservations from Mingsha Mountain, the night market and desert-edge sites.
Arrival and departure
Arrive in Xining, use a private car around Qinghai Lake, then connect by rail through Zhangye to Dunhuang. Finish at Dunhuang airport or railway station instead of returning across the plateau.
Why this route works
Two nights near each plateau stop help manage altitude and road time; Dunhuang receives the longest stay because cave reservations and desert conditions require flexibility.
